LIVING LOMONDS PROJECT
Markinch is now a designated area in the Living Lomonds Project.
The project is run by the Living Lomonds Landscape Partnership (a group of organisations in Fife and Perth & Kinross), and was set up to connect people with the Lomond and Benarty Hills and the surrounding community.
Markinch Train Station is the closest rail stop to the hills and the town offers a scenic two hour “Coul Burn Walk” from the train station to East Lomond Hill.

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR 2017
Nominations are once again open for “Markinch Citizen of the Year.”
Markinch takes pride in its residents and it is time to honour those who contribute to the town – no matter how little a contribution it may be.
The town like to celebrate their ‘local heroes’ and have been doing so through this particular award since 1985.
Residents are asked to fill out a nomination form (that can be found in the Co-op, Wine Gallery or the Markinch Community Council Website) for a person they think deserves recognition for their work and effort.
They are looking for someone who has (criteria set out by Markinch Community Council):
-
Performed an outstanding service
-
Given unselfishly to others
-
Made exceptional voluntary contributions for the betterment in the community.
If you know someone who meets this criteria, then be sure to hand in a nomination form to the community council before April 30th 2017. All submission details can be found on their website.
The winner will be announced at a ceremony at the Highland Games on June 4th 2017.
CONCERNS OVER JOHN DIXON PARK
Locals in Markinch are still unhappy at the state of the pathways in John Dixon Park.
The paths have been in a poor state for a long time now and the community was promised that they would be finished before last year’s Highland Games, but this was not fulfilled.
The unfinished work has caused the paths to be uneven and a hazard to those walking, on mobility scooters and with prams and buggies.
The organisers of the Highland Games have informed Fife Council that they will be using the park on Sunday 4th June for this year’s games but they will not be filing any risk assessments until the council have done so first.
Locals have been concerned about the safety over the park over the last year and are hoping that the problem will be resolved soon – especially before this year’s Games.
SUMMER FAYRE CONTRIBUTORS NEEDED
The organisers behind Markinch Summer Fayre are looking for contributors for this year’s event.
After last year’s success, the fayre is expanding and is on the hunt for local business, craft and food vendors to hire out a pitch in John Dixon Park.
The fayre will take place on 30th July 2017 and pitch prices are the same as last year – with 4m metre pitches costing £10 and 12m food vendor pitches at £50.
If you are interested in hiring out a space, all you need to do is fill out an application and risk assessment before April 1st 2017. To download these go to their website and follow the guidelines there.
If you wish to represent a local charity at the fayre, you will be provided a pitch for free. Just get in touch with the organisers at Markinch Community Council for more details.
MARKINCH'S GOT TALENT
Do you have a talent you wish to share? Head on down to Markinch’s second annual summer fayre and you could have the chance to show off your talent.
If you want to take part in the fayre’s local talent showcase on July 20th 2017, then all you have to do is get in touch with the organisers at Markinch Community Council via their website.
Be quick though, as it is a first come, first served basis.
